Our schedule can vary depending on the weather, time of year, number of children in each group and
of course it is primarily dependent on the children’s attention span and where their interest takes us on any
given day. I feel that it is very important to have a set schedule however, it is just as important to allow for
flexibility if a particular situation calls for it.
In the beginning of the school year we usually start with only 2 groups and our main focus is to learn to
sit together, listen when another is speaking, learn to wait until it is our turn to speak, not to take what
another is using without asking and many, many other important social skills.
We also learn to follow directions, be respectful of others, be polite and courteous and listen to teachers. We learn to use the potty and to wash hands properly. We get lots of practice to take our jackets and shoes off and put them on again. We learn to pull our shirt up over our mouth when we cough or to go wash hands after we sneeze into them and many other important life skills.
Our 2 year old schedule is more flexible because attention spans vary widely and so our little ones in that group can freely wander from activity to activity.
In our 3 year old group the schedule is a little more strict because we like all our 3 year olds to at least try the learning activities and projects at each center. We encourage them to finish their work but if they can’t or simply don’t have the patience needed it’s ok to move on and try another activity.
The PreKG group is expected to work at each learning center and are learning that finishing their work or project is important before going on to the next activity. In this group children learn to count up to 100 get introduced to simple adding and subtracting, write and sound out letters (lower case as well as capitals). We also learn about shapes, days of the week, sequencing, ordering, patterns and whatever else we can think of that catches our interest.
But mostly we remember that we’re kids and so it’s really important to us to have so much fun doing what we’re doing that sometimes it may seem that all we do is goof around.
